Every morning when I first arrive at work I brew a small pot of coffee and scan the day's headlines while drinking my first cup. I really wish I'd been a few cups of coffee (or booze) into the day before coming across this headline on CNN:
Boyfriend: Phobia Caused Woman's 2-year Bathroom Stay
Yes, it appears a lady in Kansas has been sitting on her toilet for TWO YEARS! But wait, the story is just getting started:
The case drew nationwide attention after Ness County Sheriff Bryan
Whipple said it appeared the Ness City woman's skin had grown around
the seat in the two years she apparently was in the bathroom.
"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her
to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."
While a phobia that leads one to feel safe on a toilet seat is a new one for me, my reaction to that is bless that poor woman's heart, why didn't someone get her help? Here is her boyfriend's answer:
"She is an adult; she made her own decision," said her boyfriend, Kory
McFarren. "I should have gotten help for her sooner; I admit that. But
after a while, you kind of get used to it."
"I should have gotten help for her sooner." You think?! That has to win the prize for understatement of the year. Officials are still weighing whether or not to charge the boyfriend in the case. I say absolutely. It seems pretty obvious to me that this poor lady couldn't take care of herself. And whether legally bound to care for her or not what human being lets this happen right in front of them?
Once again reality is stranger than fiction and I need more (coffee) to drink . . .
